| Event | Fauresmith Endurance Ride |
| Date | 07. May. 2012 - 07. Jul. 2012 |
| Location | If you are an experienced rider then the Fauresmith Endurance Ride will be calling your name. It takes place in Fauresmith,, , The Free State, |
| Type | Expos - Trade Fairs |
| Description | If you are an experienced rider then the Fauresmith Endurance Ride will be calling your name. It takes place in Fauresmith, to get there you need to travel from Bloemfontein take R706 then take the R704 and travel 108km to Jagersfontein, Follow signs from Jagersfontein to Fauresmith and travel additional 11km. Event History: Thanks to an controversial argument in 1964 debating the endurance capability of various horse breeds in a local Afrikaans magazine, namely the 'Landblou Weekblad', a live test of equestrian stamina was launched across the local landscape to settle the issue. This annual national equestrian endurance race mounts rider on steed to conquer 205km of tough terrain over a gruelling journey spanning over three consecutive days and nights. Vets check and monitor all horses' muscles and heart-rates at intervals of 25km allowing 20 minute rest periods; overstraining of horses results in immediate disqualification. To settle the debate that sparked this event the Arabian breed emerged victorious. Initially only 17 riders completed the race which now has over 300 entries annually. Selected for its ideal endurance riding climate, Fauresmith International Endurance Ride is rated as one of the most challenging endurance rides in the world. Inspiring off-road day vistas merge with freezing night temperatures where racers tend to conduct hourly checks on their horses under starlit sky. Take to the hills on your hide and test your own capabilities on hoof in an atmosphere of camaraderie and sportsmanship. Only experienced riders qualify for an experience of a lifetime rewarded with self-satisfaction and a week of broad stanced cowboy style walking. More Information? Contact the Endurance Ride Association of South Africa on +27 (0)51 448-2428 Please Note: Dates for this event to be confirmed. |

| Description | The Grahamstown National Arts Festival: Africa's largest and most colourful cultural event offers a choice of the very best of both indigenous and imported talent. Every year for 11 days (June/July) Grahamstown's population almost doubles, as over 50 000 people flock to Grahamstown in the Eastern Cape for a feast of arts, crafts and sheer entertainment. Every hall or large room becomes a theatre, parks and sport fields become flea markets, normally quiet streets have to be managed by an army of temporary traffic wardens, and every available bed in the city is booked. The festival offers more than 500 shows from opera, cabaret, drama and jazz to stand-up comics and folk music. From theatre to dance, opera to cabaret, fine art to craft art, classical music to jazz, poetry readings to lectures, every art form imaginable is represented in one of the most diverse festivals in the world. And there's something for every taste, with techno raves, mediaeval banquets, craft fairs, cyber cafes, carnivals, buskers and walking tours. While many come to take in the arts, others simply want to be here for the spectacle or to market products ranging from tie-dyed T-shirts and woven rugs to handmade jewellery and customized telephones. The festival operates out of the 1820 Settlers National Monument and is organized by the Grahamstown Foundation. |

| Location | Center, Pietermaritzburg, KwaZulu-Natal, |
| Type | Public Sports Events |
| Description | The world's greatest ultra-marathon, 90 kilometres long, the Comrades is a South African institution, internationally recognised for the body-sapping challenge it poses and the camaraderie it fosters among its thousands of participants. Run between the capital of the Kwazulu-Natal province, Pietermaritzburg, and the coastal city of Durban, the race alternates annually between the "up run" from Durban and the "down run" from Pietermaritzburg. Go to the Comrades Marathon website Unique test of endurance The race was the idea of First World War veteran Vic Clapham, who wanted a living memorial to those South African soldiers killed in the war. Clapham, who had endured a 2 700-kilometre route march through sweltering German East Africa, wanted the memorial to be a unique test of the physical endurance of the entrants. The constitution of the race states that one of its primary aims is to "celebrate mankind's spirit over adversity". The Comrades Marathon first took place in 1921 and has been run every year since, except from 1941 to 1945 when it was stopped during the Second World War.
